Dave Bull Mentors Student to Top College Award

CQI DIPLOMA IN QUALITY MANAGEMENT - LEVEL 5

Dave Bull was a proud onlooker as one of his students, whom he had nominated, picked up the prestigious award for “Student of the Year of Business & Professions” at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College’s Annual Awards Ceremony.

The Celebration of Achievement awards night was held at the Jurys Inn Hinckley on Friday 20th January and the student concerned was James Colver.

Dave Bull takes up the story.

“When I first spoke to James to discuss enrolment at Level 5 rather than Level 3, it was acknowledged it would be a real challenge as his previous associated learning had only been at Level 2. However, his enthusiasm and an encouraging reference from his manager convinced me that he could rise to this challenge. Although this would mean additional modules and studying would be needed to that of his peers.

His first assignment submission somewhat missed the mark, but after some personal coaching and feedback from myself, his resubmission earned a Distinction and this standard of work continued thereafter.Dave Bull & James Colver

During his Diploma James faced considerable personal challenges, including several family issues of serious illness which placed him under significant emotional stress and meant he had to spend extra time supporting family members as well as studying. In addition, he also endured the stresses of moving to a new house and taking on the responsibility of raising a stepchild during my time with him.

Despite these issues, James not only gained a “Distinction” in every module (the highest grade possible above Pass and Merit) but his results surpassed all my other students on campus, not to mention all other students nationally on 3 separate occasions.

During class, James took a leading role; bringing energy & enthusiasm, and drawing on his learning to support other students, even delivering the course material himself when I stepped out of the classroom.

James has gone on to use his college success to gain a promotion at a global manufacturing company and has applied his acquired skills in company-wide initiatives. He also leverages his experience to inspire the next generation as a STEM Ambassador.

An example of how aiming high leads to success, James has initiated plans to use his Diploma towards a full degree.

James is a real story of success and shows how hard work and application can pay off. I offer him my thanks for being an outstanding student and congratulate him wholeheartedly on this achievement”
